Parental Stress:

It took me a long time to realize that I need to take care of myself first … then I am better able to take care of others. As a Mom, Pediatrician, Sister, Daughter, and friend, there are days when I feel as if I am being pulled in many directions. ‘Take a deep breath,’ I often say to myself. Take time to eat, to breathe, to sleep, and to rest. Once you have learned ‘self care,’ everything else falls into place easier.

Our office received a call the other day about one of our parents overdosing and dying. I have known this wonderful parent for many years and did not realize the trouble she/he was having. Living in the middle of this pandemic is difficult. We all need to reach out to each other and be kind. If you have any mental illness including depression or anxiety, a substance abuse problem including alcohol and drugs … do not be afraid to ask for help. Call a friend or mental health counselor / physician to talk and get assistance.

Groups like AA are very successful, and at this time of social distancing and ‘shelter-in-place,’ I am worried that many will resort back to old, or bad, habits. Please take care of yourself. There is nothing more important than your own well-being. Many, or a few, depend on you and would greatly miss you if you weren’t here.

As always, we are open and here for all of your health needs,
